Obituary, James Dobbs
Cleveland Banner, Friday, June 7, 1872
Died,
In this county, 10 miles south of
Cleveland, on Sunday last, Mr. JAMES DOBBS, aged about 80 years.
Abstract of probate
record James Dobbs, Bradley County, TN
Accounts for distribution widow and
heirs,
Mary Dobbs, George L. Dobbs, Martha E.
Hedrick, Lydia A. McCowan, Emily Underdown, Clarinda Hayes, Alice Texas
Hayes, John Dobbs, Jesse Dobbs
Abstracted from a copy in my possession
(Thanks, Meredith)
I also have copies of various deeds
which place James Dobbs in Smith Co. TN as early as 1812. James was
drafted into the war of 1812 in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co. TN in 1814.
In trying to determine where James was born, I have compiled the
following information:
Bradley Co. census 1850 states James
was born in NC.
Bradley Co. census 1860 states James
was born in VA.
Bradley Co. census 1870 states James
was born in NC.
On the 1880 Bradley Co. TN census,
Clarinda Hayes, wife of Franklin Hayes, states her father was born in
Tenn. Jesse Dobbs gave no response to the question on the 1880 Bradley
County census. George L. Dobbs, replied NC to the question in 1880
Parker Co. TX.
On her claim for bounty land made when
she was 82 years old and 24 years after James died, Mary Ann Dobbs
stated her husband was born in Smith Co. TN.
I am inclined to believe that James was
born in North Carolina, as the VA response was made when he was married
to Mary Ann Epperson Sandridge, who was born in VA, and she did not
reply when asked in 1880, and replied Smith Co. TN in 1906 at age 82.
Census Info - James
Dobbs
1820 Smith Co. TN pg 53 - James Dobbs
010010-00010
One male 10-16, One male 26-45 [James
would be abt. 26], One female 26-45
There is also a William Dobbs on the
same page of the census - 010010-20010
making William 26-45: could be brother
or father
1830 there are three James Dobbs/Dabbs
in Tennessee
Claiborne Co. finds James Dobbs
2210004-010001 (Head(s) of household aged 40-50)
Hardeman Co. finds James Dabbs with one
male 30-40, one male under 5, one female under 5, and one female 15-20
Perry Co. finds James Dabbs 20001-00001
on page 231 (age 20-30) He is still there in 1850 so we can eliminate
this one.
Our James Dobbs family group should have a head of
household aged 36, George Lee age 5, and Martha Elizabeth age 1.
Assuming that all three entries have the correct ages(!), our James
would be the one in Hardeman County. Any of these counties would
indicate a strange migration pattern for that time period.
